A Guide to Extended Warehouse Management (EWM)
SAP EWM (Extended Warehouse Management) is used to efficiently handle inventory in the Warehouse and for maintaining the processing of goods movement. It permits the company to control its Warehouse inbound and outbound processes and movement of goods in the Warehouse.
The chief process in a Warehouse is incoming and outgoing materials, goods receipt and goods issue, fulfil customer orders, and placement of goods. When a company doesn’t store any goods, then there is no requirement for Warehouse management to handle goods.
The inbound process involves the storage of goods in the warehouse and their location and Outbound process involves picking up the goods. Whenever a material is stored in a warehouse, it is filed in the storage bin and you can find its current location.
With the aid of SAP EWM, all the good's actions are controlled by a warehouse management system and present you the tools to monitor warehouse activities. You can also handle added functions in the Warehouse like building a serial number, batch number, vendor management inventory, resource optimization, and value-added services. SAP Extended Warehouse Management enables you to not only observe the number of goods in Warehouse but to handle other critical functions and delivery of goods efficiently.
SAP Warehouse Management is opposite to Inventory management. Inventory management reports the count of goods in the storage location and its physical location is unknown. Warehouse management trades with goods movement and monitoring the physical location of the assets recorded with specific documents.

Its advantages can be seen primarily in qualitative and quantitative improvements compared to SAP WM.
Although SAP brings the momentum to logistics with S / 4HANA, some aspects are classified as a disadvantage. These are linked, for example, to the gaps in production supply. The tape supply for series production also poses a certain challenge, which can be avoided using SAP ECC.
